PHP, which stands for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor, is one of the most popular programming languages that are available out there. Any site or web-based application created in PHP will run on a given server provided that a PHP module is installed, which renders the language really universal and it is not a huge surprise that there are actually several million web servers that support it and 100s of millions of PHP-driven websites hosted on them. PHP is preferred over HTML because it permits you to build a dynamic website with plenty of features. A PHP-based community site, for instance, will display different web content to each user despite the fact that the URL will not change. By contrast, HTML websites are static and the page content itself can be updated only manually. Like any other software, PHP has different versions and the one that was used while creating a certain website must be present on the web server so that the site can run faultlessly.
